WOMEN EMPOWERMENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

About Women Empowerment

Uganda’s women’s empowerment sector provides vital opportunities to address pervasive gender inequality and inequity. The nation has established a legal and policy framework promoting gender equality, including constitutional guarantees and specific gender policies, and has achieved gender parity in primary school enrollment with progress at the secondary level. However, translating these policies into tangible equality remains a major challenge. Persistent patriarchal social norms reinforce women’s subordinate status, contribute to high rates of gender-based violence, limit women’s economic agency despite high entrepreneurship rates, and undervalue their potential for national development. This results in significant gender gaps in accessing quality employment (with a persistent gender pay gap), financial services and credit, productive resources like land (despite legal rights), and digital technology. The sector works strategically to support women and girls through initiatives focused on quality education and vocational training, comprehensive healthcare (including sexual and reproductive health), securing decent work, enhancing access to and control over property and technology, challenging harmful norms, and promoting women’s leadership and effective participation in all decision-making processes. This holistic approach aims to foster sustainable social, economic, and environmental outcomes. Participants involved in the sector gain invaluable hands-on experience and deep understanding of the multifaceted challenges women and girls face in Uganda and similar settings, learning to design and implement effective, sustainable, and locally relevant solutions
