Our Approach

FOSCOD’s Sustainable Livelihoods & Green Enterprises initiative under the Community Empowerment & Development Program (CEDP) targets underserved communities with integrated projects that improve livelihoods while restoring the environment. Currently active in Kalagala Parish, Wakisi Division, Njeru Municipality, the program empowers rural families, especially women and youth, to build green enterprises that strengthen resilience and well-being.

Our approach combines tree planting and agroforestry to restore degraded land, kitchen gardening in Naluvule and Byabuku to boost household nutrition, and women and youth-led initiatives such as e-bicycles for rural business, solar-powered salons, and micro-saving groups. With partners like the Kakira Outgrowers Rural Development Fund (KORD), we promote energy-saving cookstoves in schools, while 151 coffee farmers have been trained in sustainable coffee farming, and A biochar innovation is underway to turn agricultural and water-hyacinth waste into organic fertilizer.

Our Collaborations with Northwestern University (GESI) and Fort Lewis College connect local action with global learning for a greener, more resilient future.

Promoting shade-grown coffee and cocoa farming that preserves forest canopy, enhances biodiversity, and produces premium quality beans for better market prices.

Kalagala Greening Project

Restoring tree cover and building climate resilience in Kalagala Parish

The Kalagala Greening Project is our flagship environmental initiative aimed at restoring tree cover, combating climate change, and promoting environmental sustainability in Kalagala Parish. Since its inception, the project has engaged local communities, schools, and institutions in conservation efforts.

Kalagala Parish faces significant environmental challenges due to its proximity to Mabira Forest Reserve. A 2022 study by FOSCOD-Jinja Uganda revealed extensive loss of tree cover in the community, contributing to the current disastrous climate change being experienced.

Our approach targets households and institutions to provide community education and plant at least two trees (one fruit and one timber) at each household to ensure inclusiveness and widespread impact.

Together for a New Africa - T4NA

Kalagala Greening Project with T4NA

In April 2024, Together for a New Africa (T4NA) joined as a partner in our Kalagala Greening Project, contributing 200 tree seedlings planted at Kalagala UMEA Primary School and within the community. The trees were strategically placed along school boundaries, gardens, and open spaces, with students and teachers taking responsibility for their care.

Youth Engagement with AIESEC Uganda

AIESEC Uganda was the pioneer partner organization that supported the Kalagala Greening Project in 2022. Their involvement included two major tree planting activities that significantly contributed to our reforestation goals in Kalagala Parish.

  • Reduced annual tree planting target from 1,000 to 958 trees after first planting
  • Educated both local community and international youth on environmental conservation

  • Strengthened cross-cultural exchange and learning
  • Established foundation for future partnerships with youth organizations

Lessons Learned

The partnership with AIESEC highlighted the importance of continuous community sensitization, need for water sources for tree watering, and the value of youth engagement in environmental conservation efforts.

Community Training with Birungi Eco-Initiative

Birungi Eco-Initiative played a key role in community sensitization and training, equipping participants with knowledge on tree planting, climate change adaptation, and tree management during our April 2024 tree planting activity.
