The project will address food security, nutrition and subsistence farming to a group of 30 women using strategies that assist vulnerable families to restore food security while taking cognizance of indigenous knowledge and practices, local conditions, family labor, and seasonality of food availability, culture and other resources available to the households. Labor saving technologies and practices such as, backyard gardening as well as fostering in-kind (seeds and farming inputs) will be taught through training sessions to the families. Also, the project will incorporate behavior change communication on food consumption and nutritional practices.
Kalagala is a subsistence farming community facing the challenges of agriculture’s extreme vulnerability to climate change and several physical and social problems. Climate change has affected the rain patterns, increased dry spells among others challenges. This is a significant issue because Uganda’s agriculture is rain fed. This community has limited land for cultivation as a result of population explosion resulting from high migration (98%) and high fertility (4.7 births per woman) rates (Macrotrends 2022). The Kalagala soils have lost fertility due to over cultivation for food and for incomes, and suffer from pollution from excessive use of chemical fertilizers, Pesticides and herbicides. As a result, there is unreliable and consistent source of quality food and the community lack knowledge and basic sanitary conditions to choose, prepare and distribute food. The food production is low causing food insecurity especially the nutritious foods. The women and children are most affected because they never eat out to supplement on their diets like men.
This project is a beacon of hope, illuminating a path towards sustainable and empowered communities. By focusing on food security, nutrition, and subsistence farming, we’re not just addressing a pressing issue but also laying the groundwork for a more resilient future.
Through targeted training programs, we’re equipping farmers with the tools they need to thrive. From innovative agricultural techniques to essential nutrition knowledge, these women are gaining the skills to cultivate a more abundant and sustainable food supply. By fostering a culture of self-sufficiency, we’re empowering communities to break free from the shackles of food insecurity.
The impact of this project is far-reaching. It’s about more than just increasing household food production; it’s about improving overall well-being. As farmers become more skilled and confident, they’re better equipped to provide for their families and contribute to the broader community. By promoting sustainable practices and encouraging nutrition education, we’re not only ensuring food security but also laying the foundation for a healthier, happier, and more prosperous future.
