Redefining Health and Dignity Through Clean Water
FOSCOD is tackling urgent Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) challenges in Kalagala Parish, providing sustainable solutions for vulnerable communities.
About Our WASH Initiative
In Kalagala Parish, communities of Kalagala, Kyambogo, Naluvule, Wabusanke, and Byabuku face severe development challenges despite being under municipal boundaries. Our Community Empowerment and Development Program (CEDP) is addressing the critical need for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.
By expanding access to protected springs and rainwater harvesting systems while promoting sanitation, hygiene, and community-led governance, the project is redefining resilience, health, and dignity for vulnerable households.
Our approach combines sustainable infrastructure with community empowerment to create lasting change in these peri-urban areas that face challenges typically associated with rural settings.
The Challenge
Despite being under municipal boundaries, Kalagala Parish faces development challenges often associated with rural areas. These conditions mostly affect the vulnerable population especially the women and children thus require urgent, sustainable WASH solutions:
- Poor access to safe and reliable water sources
- Inadequate sanitation facilities, contributing to disease outbreaks.
- Food insecurity and widespread poverty.
In Naluvule community alone, the lack of clean and safe water once contributed to the deaths of about 24 children – a tragedy that underscored the urgency of our intervention… According to the LC1 Chairman of Naluvule village
Our Comprehensive Solution
FOSCOD’s WASH program provides a community-driven response to the water and sanitation crisis through multiple interconnected approaches.
Sustainable Water Supply
We have protected natural springs, and planning to install solar-powered boreholes to ensure reliable access to clean water.
Sanitation Infrastructure
Planning to build latrines and hygiene facilities so people in Kalagala Parish can live healthier lives and reduce the spread of disease
Hygiene Promotion
We train community members, local leaders and WASH committees in the Community Led Total Sanitation-CLTS approach
Monitoring & Governance
We ensure sustainability and accountability of WASH interventions through continuous monitoring and community-led governance.
Our Impact
Since the start of our program, FOSCOD has increased access to clean water and improved sanitation across all 5 villages, reducing the prevalence of waterborne diseases. Today, empowered WASH committees manage these systems effectively fostering local ownership and enhancing community wellbeing and productivity, especially for women and children. Moving forward, FOSCOD is committed to sustaining and expanding these efforts, building a healthier, more resilient population that actively contributes to inclusive economic growth.
Community Story
Before the protection of the Naluvule spring, families fully depended on an open water source shared by animals. Feeding into such contamination led to devastating child mortality rate in the year 2023 where 24 children were feared dead. Together with the Community, FOSCOD protected the spring, transforming it into a safe, reliable water source serving more than 700 people. Today, children and women no longer walk long distances in search for water and parents are relieved from watching untimely deaths.
“In the past, my relatives were getting typhoid from drinking unsafe water, but from this new protected water spring, they can now drink safe water without worrying about falling sick”- Ssemwanga, community member, Naluvule village.
