The Kalagala Microenterprise Development Project, implemented by the Foundation for Sustainable Community Based Development (FSD-Jinja Uganda), has successfully transformed the lives of women and youth in the Kalagala Parish. The project’s impact has been profound, leading to significant social, economic, and environmental improvements in the community. Below is an overview of the achieved impacts and the areas where further development support could enhance and scale the project’s success.

Achieved Impacts

Economic Empowerment and Stability:

The project mobilized women and youth into Village Savings and Lending Associations (VSLAs), equipping them with the skills needed to turn their savings into viable group microenterprise ventures that the entire group can benefit from. As a result, many participants have launched successful businesses, leading to increased household incomes and economic resilience in the community. This shift in turn has significantly helped reduce dependence on the Mabira Forest for livelihood, thus promoting environmental sustainability.

Improved Environmental Conservation:

By providing alternative income-generating activities, such as liquid and bar soap production, the project has lessened the community’s reliance on depleting the Mabira Forest for resources like charcoal and timber. This change in livelihood has contributed to the protection and preservation of the forest, enhancing the overall ecosystem in Kalagala Parish.

Skills Development and Entrepreneurship:

Participants received comprehensive training in entrepreneurship, savings management. These training sessions have empowered the community members with the knowledge and confidence to start and manage small businesses, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship that is vital for long-term economic development.

Opportunity Areas for Development Support

Scaling Up Microenterprise Initiatives:

To maximize the project’s impact, further support is needed to expand microenterprise opportunities beyond the events management business. Introducing additional businesses, such as agriculture-based ventures, handicrafts, and small-scale manufacturing, could diversify income sources and further strengthen economic resilience.

Access to Market and Finance:

While the project has succeeded in mobilizing savings and fostering entrepreneurship, participants need better access to larger markets and financial services. We aim to foster development interventions that focus on building market linkages, offering microloans, and providing marketing training to help businesses reach a wider customer base and scale their operations.

The Enhancing Household Food Security and Well-being for Byabuku Farmers Women Group project has been successfully implemented in Kalagala Parish, Njeru Municipality, Uganda. The project, led by the Foundation for Sustainable Community Based Development (FSD-Jinja Uganda), has brought about significant positive changes in the lives of women and their families. Below is an overview of the impacts achieved and the opportunities for further development support to scale these successes.

Achieved Impacts

Reduction in Food Insecurity:

The project has led to a noticeable decrease in the number of households facing food insecurity. By introducing sustainable farming methods, such as backyard gardening and the use of labor-saving technologies, families are now able to produce more food, ensuring a consistent supply of nutritious meals.

Improved Agricultural Skills:

Through a series of training sessions, women in the Byabuku Farmers Group have acquired essential skills in modern farming techniques, food preservation, and sustainable agricultural practices. These skills have empowered them to increase their agricultural productivity, contributing to better household food security.

Enhanced Nutrition and Health:

The project’s emphasis on behavior change communication around food consumption and nutritional practices has resulted in improved dietary habits within the community. Women now understand the importance of balanced diets and are applying this knowledge to enhance the well-being of their families, particularly children who are most vulnerable to malnutrition.

Economic Empowerment:

By fostering the production and sale of surplus food and other agricultural products, the project has provided an additional source of income for many households. This economic empowerment has enabled families to invest in their futures, whether through education, healthcare, or further agricultural expansion.

Opportunities for Further Development Support

Scaling Up Agricultural Production:

While the project has successfully improved food security, there is potential to scale up agricultural production even further to other community villages in Kalagala. There is also need for additional support focused on expanding access to quality seeds, fertilizers, and farming tools, enabling farmers to enhance productivity and potentially engage in larger-scale farming.

Market Access and Value Addition:

To maximize the economic benefits of increased agricultural production, there is a need to improve market access for the farmers. Development interventions could include establishing cooperatives, creating market linkages, and providing training in value addition processes, such as food processing and packaging, to increase the profitability of their produce.

The project aimed at empowering vulnerable teenage mothers in Kalagala Parish has been successfully implemented, bringing profound and transformative changes to the community.

We have partly implemented some of the project components to the group of women in Kyambogo community. The successful implementation of this project has brought about positive change in among the teenage mothers of Kyambogo in Kalagala Parish. The mothers, once marginalized and vulnerable, are now feeling empowered and trying to live healthy lifestyles. Here’s a look at the tangible impacts that have been achieved:

Significant Improvement in Health and Well-being:

The maternal and child health education provided through the internship project led by Alyssa Neskahi has led to mothers now having access to critical healthcare services, including nutrition guidance, family planning, and reproductive health support. As a result, the health and well-being of both mothers and their children are improving significantly, with fewer complications during and after pregnancy.

Economic Empowerment and Stability:

The introduction of income-generating activities through training in financial Village Saving and Lending Associations (VSLAs) has empowered teenage mothers economically. Many have started their entrepreneurial ventures, with hope to increase household incomes. This new found economic initiative has drastically reduced reliance on risky activities like illegal logging in Mabira Forest, offering a sustainable pathway out of poverty for these young families.
